Nombu Kanji

நோன்பு கஞ்சி – Nombu Kanji

Nombu kanji is a kind of porridge made mainly of rice, lentils, meat, spices and other items. Usually it is prepared during the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast for 30 days. This kanji is a healthy and easy to prepare recipe. We can feed this easily to kids as well.

Ingredients for Nombu Kanji

Rice – 1/2 cup
Moong dal – 1/4 cup 
Channa dal – 1 tbs
Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp 
Mutton – 100g
Onion – 1 (chopped)
Tomato – 1
Carrot – 1
Cashews – 1 tbs
Garlic – 7 pods
Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbs
Green chilli – 3
Cilantro – 1/2 cup
Mint – 1/4 cup
Oil – 2 tbs
Ghee – 1 tbs
Curry leaves – 1 spring 
Cardamom – 3
Clove – 5
Cinnamon – 1 stick 
Coconut milk – 1 cup 

Directions

Pre-preparation

Rinse the rice in water and soak in water for 30 minutes. 
Rinse moong dal, channa dal, fenugreek seeds in water and soak in water for 30 minutes. 
Clean the meat and grind it in blender. 

Prepare Kanji

Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker in medium flame. 
Add cinnamon, cashews, cloves and cardamom into the cooker.
Sauté a little and add garlic, green chilli and curry leaves. 
After the leaves popped, add chopped onion. 
Also add ginger garlic paste and sauté for a minute. 
Add chopped carrot, tomato, cilantro and mint. 
Stir fry the ingredients and add the ground mutton and salt. 

Grind the soaked rice coarse then add to the cooker. 
Drain the dal soaked water then add to the cooker. 
Pour 5 cups of water and close the cooker. 
Put on weight when gas comes. 
Cook the kanji for 7 whistles.
Release the pressure and open the cooker. 
Pour the coconut milk and mix well.
Nonbu kanji ready. 
Serve the kanji in bowl or glass.

Notes

Mostly mutton is used in the recipe, if you want to prepare veg soup eliminate the mutton portion and follow the other steps.
No need to add turmeric for this recipe, the kanji must be in white color.
Don’t sauté the onion until color changes. 
If you want to prepare your kanji dilute add one more cup water during cooking.
