TamilNadu Tea Kadai Bonda / Paruppu Bonda

டீ கடை போண்டா – Tea Kadai Bonda

Tea kadai bonda is famous evening snack in Southern part of Tamil Nadu. This bonda is crispy in the outside and soft in the inside. This bonda is very easy to prepare and takes less time. We can make this bonda for big parties with less effort. In my childhood I loved to taste this bonda whenever I get chance.

Ingredients for Tea Kadai Bonda

Yellow split peas – 1 cup
Urad Dal – 1/4 cup
Rice flour – 1/4 cup
Onion – 1 medium size (finely chopped)
Green chilli – 4 (finely chopped)
Cilantro & curry leaves chopped
Ginger – 1 tbs (finely chopped)
Salt as needed

Directions

Pre-Preparation

Soak the split peas and urad dal for at least 3 hrs.
Grind the peas and dal in grinder for 6 minutes.
When start grinding the dal, add some salt.
Don’t add much more water.
Like grinding vada batter, drizzle some water in between.
Batter consistency is almost same like vada batter.
But the texture must be coarse.

Batter Preparation

Add all the ingredients except rice flour.
Mix the dough until well blended.
Now add the rice flour little by little.
According to your consistency, you decide the quantity of the rice flour (check picture).
Check the salt level and adjust if needed.
Batter ready.

Make Bonda

Heat oil in low medium flame.
Take bonda batter and make round shape.
Add the bonda batter after the oil heated.
Flip the bondas and fry it until it turns to golden brown and crispy.
Take out the bondas.
Serve the bonda with tea and coconut chutney.

Notes

When mixing the batter, don’t give pressure. Keep the vacuum (bubbly texture) in the batter so that it gives soft and crispy bonda.
