Spooky Sugar Cookies / Halloween Cookies

Halloween cookies are specially prepared for Halloween season. Making creepy creature shaped cookies and pumpkin shape cookies with decoration makes the celebration very special. Halloween cookies are very easy to prepare and fun to decorate. This recipe is a must try one with kids. 

Ingredients for Halloween Cookies

Cookie Dough

All purpose flour – 1.5 cups 
Butter – 1/2 cup (softened)
Sugar – 3/4 cup
Egg – 1
Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
Baking powder – 1 tsp
Salt – 1/4 tsp

Icing

Icing sugar – 2 cups 
Milk – 6 tsp + needed

Directions

Prepare Dough

Beat the butter and sugar in a mixing until well mixed. 
Crack the egg and vanilla extract and beat again. 
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt. 
Add half of the sifted flour into the mixing bowl. 
Start mixing the flour and add the remaining flour. 
Knead the dough until smooth. 
Cover the dough with plastic wrap or a bowl.
Keep the dough in refrigerator for at least 1 hour or until firm to roll.

Pre-heat the oven into 350°F (180°C)

Make Cookies

Roll half of the dough into 1 inch thick round. 
Use cookie cutter, cut out the shapes.
Place the cookie dough in a buttered pan.
Bake the cookies for 8 – 10 minutes. 
Let the cookies completely cool down. 

Prepare Icing & Decorate (Optional)

Add 4 tsp milk in a mixing bowl. 
Little by little add icing sugar and mix well. 
Thick base icing ready. 

Piping

This icing is perfect for piping. 
Fill the icing in a ziplock cover. 
Cut the edge and fill over the cookie.
Add gel color and base icing in a small bowl and make different color icing. 
Let the icing on cookie dry completely. 

Floating

Add very little amount of milk to the thick icing. 
Mix well and make floating consistency icing. 
If needed add color gel and float the icing over the cookie.
Let the icing to dry completely. 
Halloween cookies ready. 
Keep the cookies in an airtight container. 
These cookies does have more than one week of self life. 

Notes

Decorate the cookies according to your wish.
Store bought sprinkle icing is easy to decorate. 
Thick icing have lots of sugar and it forms thick layer. 
Floating layer is easy to decorate and shinny with less sugar.
You may add any flavors (almond essence) to the icing. 
If you’re going to add essence, limit the milk amount according to that.
