வாழைத்தண்டு பொரியல் (Valaithandu Poriyal – Banana Stem Poriyal)
Valaithandu poriyal is a healthy food because it is a good source of fiber. It’s good for diabetic patients and for those who wants to to reduce weight. Most of us think cleaning and cooking of valaithandu is too hard but it’s very easy. I explained the easy cleaning process step by step here. Be aware of to buy young valaithandu otherwise you have to clean more thread from that.
Ingredients for Valaithandu Poriyal
Valaithandu (Banana stem) – 2
Onion – 1/2 cup chopped
Green chilli – 3
Mustard seeds & urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Curry – 1 spring
Oil – 1 tbsp
Coconut – 1/3 cup
Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
Channa dal – 1 tsp
Salt as needed
Directions
Cleaning
Valaithandu has many outer layers.
Peel the layers and take the thick stem out.
Remove the two side edges of the stem.
Start slicing the stem into round shape.
Now you can see the thread like fiber sticking with knife.
Roll the thread and pull out with your fingers.
Follow the same method for every round piece.
Then chop the valaithandu into small pieces.
Take the valaithandu with water in a mixing bowl.
Wash it well.
Spice grinding
Take blender jar then add chopped green chilli, cumin seeds and coconut.
Grind them well.
Cooking
Take a pan and pour oil; keep heat in medium flame.
Add the mustard seeds & urad dal; after the seeds cracked add curry leaves.
Add channa dal and sauté for a minute.
Now add the chopped onion.
Sauté them until onion turns into golden brown.
Add turmeric and salt then mix well.
Now add washed valaithandu pieces and mix well.
Close the pan with lid and cook in medium flame for 5 minutes.
Finally add the ground spice and cook for 2 minutes in low flame.
Vazlithandu poriyal ready.
Serve as a side for rice.

Grind cumin seed, coconut, green chilli 
Ground spices 
Add ground spcies 
Mix well and cook for 2 mins in low flame
