தயிர் வடை (Thayir Vadai / Dahi Vada)
Thayir vadai is a type of snack which is prepared by soaking vadas in thick curd(yogurt). In some places in India, they prefer sweet curd and for garnishing kara boondi, cilantro or a combination of cilantro and tamarind chutneys.
Ingredients for Thayir Vadai
For preparing Vada
Urad vada batter – 2 cup
Pepper – 1 tbs (crushed)
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Curd preparation for soaking
Thick curd – 2 cup
Thin butter milk – 1/2 cup curd + 2.5 cup water
Coconut – 1/2 cup chopped
Green chilli – 2
Ginger – 3 small pieces
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Salt as needed
For Garnish
Cilantro
Karaboondi
Chaat masala (optional)
Directions
Heat thin butter milk with salt and keep aside.
Add pepper powder and curry leaves into the vada batter.
Mix everything well with hand or spatula.
Heat oil in a kadai and drop the batter into the oil as small balls.
Take out the vadai when cooked both side and soak that in the warm butter milk.
Transfer the chopped coconut, green chilli, ginger and cumin seeds in to a mixie.
Blend well into fine paste, pour curd into a juice jar and blend for a minute.
Mix coconut paste and blended curd then add the soaked vada into it.
Keep the dahi vada in refrigerator and serve or serve as is.
Drizzle chopped green chilli and karaboondi while serving.
Thayir vadai ready.
Notes
Don’t fry the vadai too crispy.
You may soak the vadai with just salted warm water but butter milk gives extra flavor.
Since we soak vada in buttermilk, we don’t need to squeeze the water out from vada.
