தேங்காய் சட்னி (Coconut Chutney)

Coconut Chutney is a popular south indian recipe usually offered with Idly, dosa and pongal. This chutney is almost prepared in all houses. Ingredients for Coconut Chutney

Coconut chopped – 3/4 cup
Roasted gram dal – 1/3 cup
Green chilli – 3
Ginger chopped – Small piece
Garlic – 1 pod
Curry leaves – 2 spring
Mustard seeds and Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida – Small pinch
Salt as needed

Directions

Grinding

Take all ingredients except asafoetida, mustard seeds & urad dal in a blender.
Add little water and grind everything coarsely (not so smooth).
Transfer this to a bowl, add water if needed to adjust the thickness of chutney.

Pan fry

Heat a small pan with little oil.
Add mustard seeds & urad dal and wait till mustard cracks.
Then add curry leaves and Asafoetida.
Pour the mix in to the chutney and still well.

Notes

If you want a spicy chutney, you can add one more green chilli before grinding.

In case if you still feel the spice is not enough, add one dry red chilli (vathal) when ‘pan fry’ mustard seeds.
