Brinjal Gravy

எண்ணெய் கத்திரிக்காய் குழம்பு (Brinjal Gravy)

Brinjal Gravy called as yennai kathirikkai is my all time favourite. This is my mom’s special recipe. During my college days, whenever I’m at home my mom cook this for me. Potato podimas and yennai kathirikkai is one of the best combinations. My friends loved this very much. After every home visit I brought this for my hostel friends and within 5 minutes, we finish the whole box.

Ingredients for Brinjal Gravy

Brinjal – 1/4 kg
Small onion – 1/2 cup (chopped )
Tamarind – 1 tbsp
Masala – 1 tbsp
Chilli powder – 1/2 tbs
Turmeric powder – pinch
Sesame oil – 3 tbs
Mustard seeds & urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1/8 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 spring

Directions

Soak the tamarind with water for at least 30 minutes
Extract tamarind pulps
Heat pressure cooker with oil

After the seeds cracked add curry leaves
Add chopped onion and saute for a minute
Slice the brinjal as shown in the picture
Add tamarind extract, masala, chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt.
Pour 3/4 cup of water then mix well
Add the sliced brinjal and give a gentle mix
Close the pressure cooker with lid
Pressure cook for 4 whistle in medium flame
Yennai kathirikkai ready

Notes

Use young brinjal for this recipe
Don’t add more water otherwise you won’t get the correct texture
Don’t slice the brinjal very thin otherwise it’ll smash
