காய்கறி உப்புமா (Rava Kichadi)
Rava kichadi is a South Indian breakfast which is cooked with veggies and rava. This is my son’s favorite breakfast and he eats with coconut chutney. Vegetable upuma is an easy way to make kids to eat veggies. This ரவை கிச்சடி is a quick and healthy breakfast.
Ingredients for Rava Kichadi
Rava/ Sooji – 1.5 cup
Shallots/ small onion – 4 (chopped)
Ghee – 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds & urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Dry red chili – 4 to 6
Water – 3 cups
Salt as needed
Veggies
Peas – 1/3 cup
Beans – 1/2 cup (chopped)
Carrot – 1
Optional Ingrediens
Turmeric – 1 pinch
Ginger – 1 tbs (chopped)
Cashews – 2 tbs
Directions
Pre-preparation
Heat 1 tsp ghee in a wide pan and add the rava.
Roast the rava until golden brown.
Transfer the roasted rava in to a plate.
Cut carrot into lengthwise.
Add all the veggies in a pan and cook with salt and water.
Prepare Kichadi
Heat the remaining ghee in the same pan.
Add mustard seeds & urad dal.
After the seeds cracked, add curry leaves.
Once leaves popped, add onion, red chili and ginger pieces.
Sauté them and add the cashews.
Add the cooked veggies.
Also add turmeric and salt and mix well.
Pour water and check the salt level.
Boil the water until bubbles come.
Reduce the flame to low and add the roasted rava little by little.
Mix the rava continuously without leaving hands to avoid forming lumps.
After the water completely absorbed by the rava, stop the flame.
Rava kichadi ready.
Serve the Vegetable Upma with coconut chutney and sambar.
Notes
Adjust vegetable quantity according to your taste.
You may add more ghee for this recipe for rich finish.
You can use green chili instead of dry red chili.
After switch off the flame, you may add 1 tbs of extra ghee as well for restaurant finish.
