மல்லி புதினா சட்னி (Green Chutney)
Green chutney is one of the common chutney offered in all south Tamilnadu restaurants.
It’s a combination of cilantro, mint, tomato and coconut. This Green chutney is a best match for onion Uthappam. In my home town they give this for onion uthappam, which is very tasty and famous there. I tried this combination at home and got the same result. This Green chutney is kids favorite and healthy too.
Ingredients
Mint (puthina) – 1.5 cup (only leaves)
Cilantro – 4 cup (chopped)
Onion – 1/4 cup (chopped)
Garlic – 4 pods
Dry red chilli – 4
Green chilli – 2
Tomato – 2
Coconut – 1/3 cup (chopped)
Urad dal – 1 tbs
Oil – 1/2 tbsp
Salt as needed
Directions
Step 1
Take a pan then pour oil and add urad dal.
Saute the dal until it turns golden brown.
Now add the green chilli & dry red chilli then saute them in low flame.
Then add garlic and saute for a while.
Step 2
Now add the chopped onion and saute for a minute.
Add the chopped tomato and saute until mushy.
Then add salt and coconut and mix well.
Now, add the washed mint leaves and mix well in medium flame.
Finally add cilantro little by little.
Step 3
When the cilantro reduced, stop the flame.
Let the cilantro mix to cool down for 30 minutes.
When the cilantro mix is cooled down, transfer the mix in to a blender (mixie jar) and blend it until fine paste.
Now, Green chutney ready.
Serve with dosa or Idly.
Notes
Tomato’s sourness is enough for this chutney, if you want to add tamarind reduce the tomato or swap the tomato.
Don’t add the mint stems because it won’t blend well.
The combination of green chilli and red chilli give a nice flavor to the chutney.
