Kara Boondi

காரா பூந்தி (Kara Boondi)

Kara Boondi is one of the main ingredients in mixer but can also be eaten alone. The process of making boonthi is very simple and I have provided simple to follow recipe here with detailed pictures.

Ingredients for Kara Boondi

Besan flour – 3/4 cup
Rice flour – 1/4 cup
Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
Butter – 1 tbsp
Oil – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Turmeric powder – 1 pinch
Baking soda – 1 pinch
Salt as needed

Directions

Prepare Batter

In a mixing bowl take besan flour, rice flour, salt, turmeric and baking soda.
Mix everything well and pour the melted butter.
Now add water little by little and bring the mix to dosa batter consistency.

Prepare for Frying

Take boonthi karandi and a plate to keep the karandi near stove.
Heat oil in a frying pan.
When oil is ready for frying maintain the flame in medium.
Take a round serving spoon to pour the batter to the oil.

Make Boondi

Hold the boondi karandi little above the pan and take one spoon of batter and pour that in the karandi.
Then spread the batter on the boondi karandi using the same spoon.
Fry the boondi until the colour change and take the boondi out.
Finish the rest of the batter in the same way.

Adding spices

Take a wide pan or a wok and add oil.
After the oil is heated, add curry leaves and chilli powder. Switch of the flame when curry leaves fried well.
Now add boondi to the spices and mix thoroughly.
Kara boondi is now ready..

Notes

If the boodi is not in a round shape change the boondi karandi’s height you are holding.
Don’t over crowd the boondi in one batch.
You can fry the curry leaves in the same boondi frying pan.
Also you can add nuts like peanuts, cashews into this recipe.
