டிபன் சாம்பார் இட்லி (Tiffin Sambar & Mini Idly

Tiffin sambar & Mini idly is one of the best combination and also kids favorite. This is a famous South Indian breakfast/ dinner recipe. Tiffin saambar is very easy to prepare and it doesn’t need more vegetables. This type of sambar is preferred to use in sambar Idli or sambar vada.

Ingredients for Tiffin Sambar

Moong dal – 1/4 cup
Toor dal – 1/4 cup
Small onion – 10
Tomato – 2
Sambar masala – 2.5 tbs
Turmeric powder – 1 pinch
Hing – 1 pinch 
Sesame oil – 2 tbs
Mustard seeds & urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Dry red chilli – 2
Curry leaves – 1 spring 
Cilantro – 1 tbs
Salt as needed 

Idly Batter – 3 big scoops

Directions

Tiffin Sambar

Take moong dal and toor dal in a pressure cooker. 
Rinse the dal and add turmeric, hing and 1 drop of oil.
Pour enough water to immerse the dal. 
Close the lid and pressure cook the dal for 5-7 whistles. 
Heat a pan with sesame oil in medium flame.
Add mustard seeds and urad dal.
After the seeds cracked add curry leaves. 
Add onion and dry red chilli when curry leaves pop. 
Stir the onion for a minute and add chopped tomatoes. 
Sauté them until tomatoes turns mushy. 
Add masala and salt then mix well, transfer into the pressure cooker. 
Mix everything  until dal and spices combine well.
Pour some more water and adjust salt, water level then add chopped cilantro. 
Pressure cook again for one whistle. 
Tiffin sambar ready.

Mini Idly

Grease the Idli plates with oil.
Heat water in Idli pot for 5 minutes. 
Pour Idli batter in Idli plates with small spoon/ laddle.
Place the Idli plates in preheated idly pot.
Cover the pot with lid and cook for 10 minutes. 
Mini idly ready.
Serve the Mini idly with Tiffin sambar.

Notes

You may use kuzhambu masala too for Tiffin sambar.
I usually use combination of both dal for this recipe, you may use any one of the dal of 1/2 cup too.
