Sorakkai Kootu

சுரைக்காய் கூட்டு (Sorakkai Kootu)

Sorakkai kootu is a traditional South Indian side dish. Suraikkai have lots of health benefits like helps in digestion, weight loss, reducing stress, etc. In this recipe, I use channa dal that tastes so good. This kootu is an easy to prepare recipe. My kids like this kootu very much.

Ingredients for Sorakkai Kootu

Sorakkai – 2 cups (chopped)
Oil – 2 tsp 
Channa dal – 1/2 tbs
Dry red chilli – 2 
Green chilli – 1 (crushed)
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp (crushed)
Shredded coconut – 2 tbs
Small onion  – 2 (chopped)
Mustard seeds & urad dal – 1/4 tsp 
Curry leaves – 1 spring 

Directions

Soak the dal for one hour. 
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds & urad dal. 
After the seeds cracked add curry leaves. 
Once the leaves pops, add chopped onion and sauté a little. 
Add soaked channa dal, dry red chilli and salt. 
Sauté them for one minute. 
Add the sorakkai and mix everything well. 
Pour half cup of water then cover the pan and cook until dal is cooked. 
Add cumin powder, green chilli and shredded coconut now. 
Mix everything well and switch off the flame. 
Sorakkai kootu ready.

Notes

After dal is cooked, sauté until all water evaporates. 
Green chilli is optional to this recipe.
You may grind coconut, green chilli and cumin seeds then add to the kootu.
