Peerkangai Poriyal

பீர்க்கங்காய் பொரியல் (Peerkangai Poriyal)

Peerkangai poriyal is a common side dish in southern part of India. Peerkangai also know as Ridge guard does have lots of health benefits, like it enhances vision, remedies for anemia, promotes weight loss and relieves constipation. This recipe takes very less time to prepare and one of a beginner recipe as well.

Ingredients for Peerkangai Poriyal

Peerkangai – 1/4 kg
Masala – 1/2 tbs
Turmeric – 1/4 tsp
Small onion – 2 (chopped)
Oil – 2tsp
Mustard seeds & urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 spring 
Salt as needed

Directions

Peel the skin off the peerkangai completely. 
Chop the peerkangai into bite size pieces. 
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and urad dal. 
After the seeds cracked add curry leaves. 
Once after curry leaves popped, add onion and change the flame into medium. 
Sauté the onion for a minute then add the chopped peerkangai. 
Then add masala, turmeric powder and salt. 
Mix everything well and close the pan with lid. 
Cook the poriyal for 5 minutes in low flame. 
Peerkangai poriyal ready.
Transfer the poriyal into a serving bowl.
Serve the poriyal as a side with rice, kuzhambu and vadagam.

Notes

If the peerkangai is matured one, discard the big size seeds, otherwise cook with seeds.
You may use sambar powder instead of masala. 
Add shredded coconut/ peanut powder after switch off the flame (optional).
